related to the first presidential debate saying governor mitt romney's performance against the president could very well change the entire race. but how important are presidential debates and how much do they really shape the outcome in november? we heard a lot. joining me someone who has done research on polling impact of past debates. larry sabato, director of center for politics at the university of virginia. larry, historically speaking how big of a deal are the first debates really? >> well it can be a dig deal, jenna. of course governor christie was right. he got off message as you know because part of the amusing previous view to a presidential debate is the attempt by both sides to run down their own candidate. about how horrible a debater they are and the other side is so terrific. so governor christie may be committed a behalf by telling the truth. if you look historically, there is a pretty good chance that mitt romney can make up some ground. usually, not always, but usually the challenger to the incumbent just by standing on the stage and doing a credible job, can make up so

presidential debate. jessica, thanks. also in new york city mitt romney speaking at the clinton global initiative just ahead of the president. romney focused on foreign policy as well vowing he would link u.s. foreign aid to trade with help going to developing countries that remove barriers to investment and trade. he also discussed unrest in the middle east and said he would have a different approach than president obama. >> a lot of americans including myself are developed -- excuse me, are troubled by developments in the middle east. syria has witnessed the killing of tens of thousands of people. the president of egypt is a member of the muslim brotherhood. our em bass dor to libya was assassinated in a terrorist attack. iran is moving towards nuclear weapons capability. we somehow feel that we're at the mercy of events rather than shaping events. a year from now i hope to return this meeting as president having made substantial progress towards the forms i've outlined. i also hope to remind the world of the goodness and the bigness of the american heart. never apologize for america

to be an issue in the debates between governor romney and president obama. it is such an important issue. host: via twitter, mr. ambassador -- what do you think? guest: i am not sure whether he is referring to regime change in iraq or iran. it is very difficult for the united states to go in and plan to topple the regime of another country. we did so successfully in march 2003. our military was brilliant in their offensive into iraq and update his/saddam hussein. but then we found out that we had tuesday -- and dislodge saddam hussein. but then we found out we had to stay, and everybody knows the tragic story of what happened. the united states needs to be the strongest country in the world. at the same time, we need to know the value of restraint. we cannot solve everybody's problem. we cannot over use and ask the military to do too much. we cannot fight our way through every problem. president obama -- this is what president obama has been talking about, and i hope this comes up in the debates. we need to return to diplomacy. backed by force, of course, and a strong military but normally, bu

of the economy or foreign policy, i think he will lose. if we have a very small ball debate where the romney campaign spends two days criticizing president obama for not having the following six meetings and what about the sentences he said, obama thinks he can ride that to a narrow but clear victory. i think he's probably right. so i think the key is to mange the big -- make the bigger arguments against president obama. jon: you were a big advocate for the candidate service of paul ryan -- candidacy of paul ryan before he became mitt romney's vice presidential choice. has he brought the kind of gravitas to the ticket and some of these issues to the fore that you were hoping for? >> yeah, i think so. look, in the two-and-a-half weeks after ryan was picked, the romney/ryan ticket narrowed the gap from about four points to one point. it's opened up again to close to four points because i think at the convention and afterwards the romney campaign has lapsed into a kind of pre-ryan campaign. i think ryan's clarity about the choice ahead is helpful, his criticism of the replacement rests this mor
